I Made a Couture Skirt Entirely From Paper

Hi gang. Welcome back to my blog! 🤗

If you follow my personal Instagram (@_notjaneausten), you may have seen a recent photo of me wearing a skirt made entirely from paper. Magazines, sketchbook paper, and lotssss of clear tape, to be exact.

Le dress

If we’re talking specifics, the exact amount of each material used was:

• 4 pieces of large sketchbook/watercolor paper

• 34 pages from an old issue of Atlanta Style

• 6 old calendar pages

An unknown but surely absurd amount of clear tape

Many paper cuts later :/

Despite the amount of paper cuts (those things h u r t), I must say that I am extremely proud of how this turned out. This was my biggest non-sewing project ever completed. No thread, no needles, no fabric.

I can’t tell you exactly where my inspiration came from for this skirt, because I honestly have no idea. Alas, I am no wizard. Sometimes I have good ideas, and most of the time I don’t. It’s often a hit-or-miss situation.

However, this time I hit on something. After posting my skirt to Instagram, it caught the attention of YouTube personality Micarah Tewers. Micarah is one of my many fashion inspirations, and did me a kind favor by sharing my design with her Instagram followers. Within two days I had gained 150 new followers, received several sweet DMs, way more comments than usual, and over 700 likes on my photo. It was pure insanity.

Although the small amount of “fame” or “publicity” was short-lived, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my creation with potentially millions of people. 🙂

Because of this strange time we’re all going through, I’d like to encourage my readers to try something new. If you wish to learn an instrument, start a blog, or even construct a skirt made of paper, then I happily invite you to go for it. It’s true that life is short, however, I know it seems to be dragging on during this time. Each day that passes can seem as though it’s the same routine, oftentimes leaving you feeling as if no time has passed at all since March.

Readers and fellow quarantine-confined friends, please believe me when I tell you that this will pass and life will return to normalcy. Eventually we will get back to where we were, but in the meantime, I think we should try some new things.

That is all for today. If you’ll allow me to, I think I’ll finish my bowl of mid-afternoon cereal now. Stay safe and wash your hands. 💓
