My questions are in large font, and Caleb’s answers are in default.
1. How long have you been YouTubing?
I’ve been making videos for almost exactly 2 years. My first video was one that I made of when I learned to longboard. I filmed it on a GoPro, with a sketchy selfie stick that I had made out of a mic stand. Through the process I realized that I really loved it, and others enjoyed it too!
2. Who/what inspired you to start YouTubing?
After that, throughout the summer I tried making a few different videos. Around that time, I got an opportunity from a missions organization to make a video for them! I learned a lot through that process. Everybody there was really encouraging, and it made me want to keep trying.
3. What’s the hardest thing about making videos? What’s the easiest thing?
I would say the hardest thing is continuing to be inspired. Sometimes I want to give up when I look at the views, or subscriber count. I often get discouraged, and have to check my motives. The easiest thing is when I have a really good opportunity to film, like being asked to go on a road trip to Chicago! It sometimes seems like things are just asking to be filmed.
4. Do you use social media to promote your channel? If so, has it helped you gain subscribers?
I don’t usually promote my videos. I never want to annoy people with ads of any kind. But often my friends kindly post links for people to see my videos, and when they do that the views definitely come in faster!
5. Who’s your favorite YouTuber?
My favorite YouTuber is Peter McKinnon, I found him around the time that he started, and his style blew me away. I’ve learned so much from his videos! Another favorite of mine is the Northmen, for their very natural and clean way of making a story.
6. What program do you use to edit your videos?
I started out on iMovie, then moved to premiere elements, and now use a program called davinci resolve. It’s so rich in features, and the color grading tools are some of the best out there. It was a steep learning curve, but I absolutely love it!
7. How many subscribers do you have?
I have 32 subscribers. Very little. I have a pretty small audience, and I’m OK with that. I always remind myself that I don’t make videos for views or money. I do it because I love it! I’ve learned a lot, and I love being able to look back on memories. My friends are always super supportive, and are always happy to be in my videos! I don’t upload my biggest projects on YouTube, because I usually make them for other people and missions.
8. Do you prefer to make longer or shorter videos?
Most of the time they’re in between 3 and 10 minutes long. I really love this length of video, because it doesn’t take too much time to make, and it seems engaging!
9. Lastly, can you make an acronym out of your name?
Yes! It might be something like this: ‘Caleb’s artful lens and essential brothers”
